The Power Of Five (Series)[]

The Power of Five (also known as The Gatekeepers in the US) is a series of fantasy and suspense novels, written by British author Anthony Horowitz. As of 2012, all the novels have been completed (although Anthony Horowitz stated on Twitter that he had to rewrite Book Five, Oblivion, due to a suggestion from his agent). The fifth and final novel in the series, Oblivion, has been released in the UK on October 4th, 2012. He also stated that he researched global warming warming for the last book in the Power of Five series.[1] The series is published in the UK by Walker Books Ltd and in the US by Scholastic Press. The novels deal heavily in the occult and examples of things such as human sacrifice and blood rituals are major plot elements, such as in the first book, where the protagonist, Matt, is hunted by a Satanic cult who want to conduct a blood sacrifice on him to blast open a portal using a combination of nuclear physics and black magic, to unlock another dimension which is holding a group of ancient evil demons captive.

Plot Overview[]

The series focuses on five children: Matthew Freeman, Pedro, Scott Tyler, Jamie Tyler, and Scarlett Adams, a group of fourteen-year-old children (all five children turn fifteen in Necropolis) who are destined to defeat mystical entities known only as the Old Ones who ruled for a long period of time ten thousand years ago. Matt is the appointed leader. The Gatekeepers won in the past through allowing Sapling, the third Gatekeeper, to sacrifice himself, and upon Sapling's death, his future incarnation, Jamie Tyler, was sent into the past to reunite all the Gatekeepers and repair their strength to defeat the Old Ones. The Gatekeepers also won because the Old Ones do not understand Scarlett Adams' powers. In the present day the Gatekeepers have been reincarnated as modern day teenagers because the Old Ones are about to escape the world they were sent to and rule over humanity a second time. The books focus on the modern day children trying to defeat the Old Ones again.

The Five[]

The Five Gatekeepers are Matthew Freeman, Pedro, Jamie Tyler, Scott Tyler and Scarlett Adams

Raven's Gate[]

Fourteen year old Matthew Freeman is living in Ipswich with his aunt and uncle Gwenda Davis and Brian Conran. His parents died when he was eight, by drowning in a car crash. It is later said that Matt foresaw the event happening in a dream, and managed to stay home. During the first book he blames himself multiple times for not stopping them from going too. In the six years since then, he has become a delinquent, stealing and truanting under the influence of his friend Kelvin Johnson. They go to a warehouse to steal electronic items but are caught. In panic, Kelvin stabs the guard and flees, blaming the event on Matt, but Matt stays with him until the police arrive. They are both arrested. Kelvin is said to have been sent to jail however Matt is given the opportunity to go into a government program called the LEAF project. In the LEAF project, troubled children are put in homes out into the countryside to be lead away from temptation. Matt agrees to this offer. He is put in the care of a woman called Jayne Deverill who lives in a town called Lesser Malling. Matt attempts to run away many times but fails. Firstly he tries to escape in the night but the roads all circle him back to where he came from. He then runs to Greater Malling where he meets his friend Richard Cole. However he later gets caught by Jayne and Noah. Later, he almost gets drowned in a bog running from monsters, chasing him from Omega One. However Matt unintentionally uses his powers to call Richard, and he saves him and takes him back to York. They then go to see Elizabeth Ashwood but she has passed away, they talk to her daughter, Susan Ashwood instead. Matt and Richard go to London to see Sanjay Dravid in the natural history museum, only for Jayne Deverill to turn the dinosaurs alive, killing Dravid, trapping Richard and them taking Matt.

Noah keeps him in the barn, but by taking off one of the floorboards, he kills Noah and escapes. He tries to escape by running up the hill and meeting Sir Michael Marsh, who then captures him and takes him to Omega One. At omega one all of the villagers are there, and Richard is there too to watch them kill Matt. However Matt uses his powers to escape the facility, and they end up killing Jayne in a tub of radioactive waste. The gate opens but the plant destroys in on itself and the gate is left shut.

Evil Star[]

The evil at Raven's Gate has been sealed again - but a second, more powerful Gate is opening, this time in Peru, South America. Matthew is sent there by the Nexus, the society formed to fight the Old Ones, whose job it is to protect Matthew and the Gatekeepers. Matthew and Richard Cole, a journalist who saved his life at Raven's Gate, travel to Peru but from the start things go horribly wrong. They are taken to meet Fabian, but Richard gets kidnapped in the process. Matt flees, and falls unconcious due to tiredness. When he wakes, he is greeted by a beggar seen on the street, who is later introduced as the second gatekeeper, Pedro. They both go to the house of Diego Salamanda, and they manage to escape with help of Atoc. It is revealed that Atoc is part of the crew that kidnapped Richard. He then takes the two to the Inca village of Vilacabamba, where they are greeted by Richard. After, they go to the Hacienda of Professor Joanna Chambers. They realise that Salamanda has created equipment to move the stars so the gate can open, so the Incas destroy the laboratory, to find that he has created a cabin out in the desert. They go out to destroy the cabin to stop his plans but it is too late. The gate opens and the Old Ones emerge. A Condor, a Monkey, a Spider and a giant Man called Chaos. He falls unconsious but Pedro heals him with his power. Matt hurts Chaos, leader of the Old Ones.

Nightrise[]

Jamie and Scott Tyler are both telepathic twins living in Nevada, USA who perform telepathic acts. According to Horowitz's official website, Nightrise is like nothing he has done before.[2] Nightrise was officially released on 2 April 2007 in the UK and was then released in the USA on May 1, 2007. The first chapter was hidden in Horowitz's website in August 2006.

The story starts with Scott and Jamie Tyler working for a a circus in Reno, Nevada. One night, the Nightrise Corporation kidnap Scott, but Jamie escapes with a woman named Alesha, who is looking for her son Daniel. Scott is said to be at Silent Creek Prison, so Jamie goes, there, only for him to brought somewhere else. In an altercation, Jamie is shot and is put in a coma. In this coma he is sent 10,000 years into the past and finds out there were gatekeepers 10,000 years before the events of the book series. He fights the battle because his old equivalent, Sapling, died. They trick the old ones by Chaos thinking the battle is lost, before Jamie comes out and kills Chaos. After waking, he realises that Scott is being used to help Warren Cornfield kill John Trelawney, so their candidate, Charles Baker can win. However Jamie comes in time and Cornfield kill the woman who is torturing Scott, Susan Mortlake, and they escape with Alesha. Jamie and Scott are forced to leave the car in a tunnel, and it is discovered to be the place in which they were found in a seed box. They escape into a cave in Lake Tahoe, and enter a door and end up in Cuzco, then find their way to Nazca. Four of the five are united, and it then cuts to a girl called Scarlett, holding her passport, ready to fly to Hong Kong.

Necropolis[]

Hong Kong has been taken over by the Old Ones and has become Necropolis, City of the Dead. Once in, there is no way out... Evil has been unleashed but only the Gatekeepers, children with special powers – can save it.

Matt and the other three desperately need to find Scarlett Adams, the final Gatekeeper, who has been trapped in Hong Kong, where shape-changers and possessed humans stalk the street calamity befalls Hong Kong and hope soon turns black for humanity. The Old Ones are luring the Gatekeepers into the Necropolis by holding Scarlett hostage in Hong Kong. Matt and Jamie go to Hong Kong with Richard Cole to try and thwart the Old Ones' plan, but Scarlett discovers her power all too soon. Scarlett's power is to control the weather, whereas the Old Ones presumed that she could only forecast the weather. Scarlett's power is the strongest one of all of the Five, as Matt realises, when Scarlett unleashes a storm so powerful that no-one can stop it. By holding onto her, the other four children and each with a guest survive the storm and make it into the Tai Shun temple. The Five can use special doors built into churches which the Five can use to teleport around the planet. The Five all go into the doorway, but Scarlett is mortally wounded by a stray bullet. To make matters worse, the Five have no fixed destination in mind, which results in them being scattered across the face of the planet.

Oblivion[]

The final book is about the Old Ones attempting to destroy the world through global warming, and it deals with the Gatekeepers trying to find each other again after being separated in Necropolis. On Twitter, in reply to a fan, he revealed that Oblivion would be about terrorism, over-population, resurgent fascism, and global warming. The book is therefore split into five different sections: Earth, Fire, Water, Ice and Air, relating to Matt, Pedro, Scott, Jamie and Scarlett, respectively. However, though it is an extraordinary book, the author does not particularly focus on these points, and it may be a challenge to discern them for younger readers.

Now let me spoil it for you: Jamie, in a little village in England is assisted by a girl called Holly and the Traveller, who is revealed to be Graham Fletcher who works for the Nexus, and was sent down to recover him. However, the Traveller waits for 7 years, for when Jamie does appear from a door in a church, it appears that 10 years has passed since the typhoon in Japan. They travel to London, passing through a cannibalist village, and hunted down by fly-soldiers and the police of this corrupt era who destroyed Holly's village, and pass through a door that takes them to Oblivion, where Scott, who turned traitor sacrifices himself in Antarctica to let his brother pass through. To find out more, about Scarlett, Richard, Pedro, Scott, Matt and Lohan go read the Wikipedia page. I'll just give you a little preview: Scarlett and Richard are in Egypt, Scarlett on the verge of bleeding to death but saved by Richard, Scott and Pedro are being held prisoner in Castle Nuovo, but Scott, already weakened by his previous torture accepts a deal to assist the Old Ones and Matt is with Lohan, selling himself as a slave to Brazillian mobsters, escaping using his newly advanced powers. Yeah, also, Matt goes to a library in the Dreamworld, reads about how he dies but also saves the world, about his entire life, yada yada yada, lets himself get betrayed by Scott in Antarctica, and is killed by Richard to grant him peace from the never-ending torture of Chaos for wounding him. Richard kills him with the golden _tumi._
